What is the magic pill? How many pills are you on?
Answer: I’m on a stack…and it’s not what you think, let me explain.
So many people are looking for the one magic pill.
I’ve lost count of the times people have ask me ‘what is the 1 thing I can do to help xyz’. Even if I’m at my stall at a market with a table of products and books…I usually start saying basic things, like food changes, sunshine. Their eyes glaze over and they want to know what one product they can buy to fix it.
But it is hard to blame them, when we have been set up by our modern society, over at least a few generations now, to hand over our power to ‘experts’ and expect others to find the answer for us. To want quick fixes.
To trust doctors more than our own instincts.
To want a test result before we take any action at all.
To want a pill or portion to band-aid a symptom so we can keep going on with our day. Rather than working on why the symptom is appearing in the first place.
Even if people are open to looking outside of the mainstream medical and pharmacterial world, it can often be the same mindset of looking for one answer.
To want a supplement or tonic to ‘fix’ a condition.
To want to find the one ‘magic’ thing to do, so we don’t have to change or give-up too much.
I completely get that it is a very confusing and overwhelming world out there of different protocols, different heath modalities, different food philosophies, and different gurus claiming they know the key magic element of wellness.
When people say ‘I have tried it and it didn’t work’…this sparks a lot of questions.
- How long did they try it?
- How compliant where they?
- What else were they doing or not doing at the same time?
- What is their household environment like?
- Stress levels etc at the time?
Or if people say ‘it worked for a while, but now my xyz condition has returned’. More questions are raised, ‘what old habits started to slip back in?’
What if they needed to do that change but in a better quality way and for longer?
What if they had been consistent and kept going?
What if they stacked more healthy habits together?
Cyndi O’Meara*, one of my favourite people and mentors in the wellness space, use this ‘stacking’ term recently in a podcast interview.
Health habits stacking brings together a way to describe all the layers and steps I have done since consciously starting my healing and wellness journey in 2013.
I would love to say to you there was one magic pill that helped me. Even if you call ‘food’ one thing, it can be broken down into heaps of little stacks. For example,
- Gluten-free
- Low sugar
- Organic
- Avoiding preservatives and additives
- Swapping to healthy fats
- Fermented foods
- etc.
So what I mean is, it's the stack of health habits I step by step implemented that helped me get healthier and happier.
The power of habit changes is life changing. All the health habit stacks add up.
