Six years ago, after finally having enough of feeling very unhappy and concerned about my family’s health I started slowly introducing some food changes within our family.
The benefit of those food changes has been beyond my expectations!
We are now a happier, healthier and calmer family and it’s possible for your household too.
Why did food changes make a difference?
In our busy modern lives we are forgetting that there is a massive relationship between the food we eat and our health and moods.
You know deep down that junk food is not good for you, but on the other hand you think, ‘but it can't really hurt me or the kids that bad can it?’. Or you think 'it's on the supermarket shelf so it must be ok to eat'.
We are learning about what is 'healthy food' from clever marketing which is confusing and misleading us. We are not learning about what food we really need to feel calm and balanced and keep our immune system strong to fight off illness.
So what is the #1 food change that made a difference to our weight, health and moods?
The answer = Real Food
Why? All calories are not created equal. A calorie of broccoli has a completely different affect on your body then a calorie of Tim Tam. Our body doesn’t need calories from food…it needs to absorb nutrients from food.
Why? So the body can stay healthy and strong, so we have energy, feel happy and calm. So we don’t get sick. So our body gets all the nutrients it needs to thrive!
What is wrong with the standard Australian diet?
Especially over the last 30-50 years processed food has been replacing a lot of the real food. The modern diet is deriving us of right levels and variety of the nutrients we need to thrive and is full of things that is making us weak, sick, hypo and moody. Causing illness and disease.
What is real food?
Real food is wholefoods that is still in its original state or as close to it. For example fruit and vegetables, meats, chicken, eggs, seafood, nuts and seeds.
What is NOT real food?
Real food is NOT ‘food’ in a box or packet that has been processed to within an inch of its life. That has had preservatives, colours and flavour enhancers added so it keeps looking good and can last on a shelf for months. That has had a ton of sugar added, which tastes good but gets us addicted and going back for more. The added sugar in processed foods is causing havoc with our health, weight and moods.
How do we go back to just real food?
- By prioritising our family’s health and becoming mindful of what we are eating.
- By shopping the outer aisles of the supermarket or discovering your local farmers markets.
- By cooking more from scratch (yes it might take more time, but your family's health is worth it).
- Learning to read food labels.
Start by making some swaps
Instead of cereal out of box for breakfast, cook some eggs. Instead of giving your children a packet of biscuits for recess, giving them a colourful container of cherry tomatoes, cheese cubes and cucumber sticks.
Change doesn't need to happen all at once, but the sooner you start on the path back to wholefoods the better you and your family will start to feel, behaviour and function.
